History
The history of the Salzillo Museum, from its creation to the present day
The Salzillo Museum is one of the most emblematic museums in the Region of Murcia. Created in the first half of the 20th century, more specifically in 1941 by Ministerial Order, it has the honour of being the second museum facility in the city after the creation of the provincial museums that emerged under the auspices of the Monuments Commissions and the royal concerns to halt the destruction of the historical heritage that seemed irreversible.
Inaugurated in 1960 when the Church of Jesus (built in 1696) was remodelled and work was completed on an adjoining building constructed from scratch for museum use, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by Decree 474/1962, of 1 March. B.O.E. No. 59, of 9 March 1962.
Over time, it has grown and transformed itself in line with new museological precepts and various exhibition trends, crystallised in modern and demanding facilities.
