Late 20th century

A new era begins at the Salzillo Museum

Back in the 1990s, under the direction of Cristóbal Belda, the Murcia Restaura programme was carried out, thanks to sponsorship from public bodies and private companies such as the Cajamurcia Foundation, which enabled the complete restoration of the museum collections.

The Ministry of Culture, in turn, took charge of the church’s mural paintings. Major exhibitions promoted the work of Francisco Salzillo internationally, and at the same time, the architectural restoration and renovation project was launched, which was ultimately carried out by Galician architect Yago Bonet.

The sponsorship of the Cajamurcia Foundation, together with public entities such as the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and its City Council, was crucial to this intensive restoration campaign, Murcia Restaura. These years coincided with the leadership of Professor of Art History Cristóbal Belda Navarro at the helm of the Museum.
